Dress Codes: Sexist or Sensible?

For years and years now, schools have enforced dress codes to reduce "distractions" in the classroom. They don't want a kid's graphic tee with an inappropriate message causing chaos, and they don't want students to focus on a classmate's outfit instead of focusing on their academic lesson.

But in recent years, dress code scandals have gained attention and the controversial topic has been trending in the past months. According to Newsela article "School dress codes face censure around the country for biased rules," there is concern that dress code is being enforced solely to girls, and has become a sexist matter. Every day, girls are sent home from school, given detentions and suspensions, or are humiliated in class for their outfits. A video regarding the dress code policy made by Marcus High School in Texas caused outrage and controversy over sexism still being prevalent in schools. (Click here to watch video) Most of the backlash that was received on this video was regarding the fact that only girls were being penalized, and for wearing "athletic shorts." Many believe that dress codes suggest the sexualization of young girls' bodies and punish girls for being confident in their own skin. Dress codes also limit self expression which a crucial part of individualization at this young age.

What is your reaction to the video? Do you think that dress codes are sensible in that they prevent "distractions" in that classroom? If action was taken upon these dress codes, do you think they should be reformed or banished all together? Lastly, do you think dress codes at New Trier and other schools are equally enforced between boys and girls?

  1. Last question is a great one, Lulu. What do other people think? How is this enforced (if, at all) at NT?
